I have a little bit of a confession to make. We all know I love music. I love discovering music, I love sharing music, I love listening to music so cool no one's every heard of it. Here's where the confession comes in:
I also love pop music, the top 40 kind you hear on the radio. It's all I listen to in the car. I should hate that stuff right? Wrong. I love it and I know I'm not the only one out there. So I decided to do a shout out to all my favorite embarrassing songs. I can't decide if this will be a weekly thing, monthly thing, or not a thing at all. We'll just see how it goes.
So without further ado, I bring you the first installment of "This Is My Jam:"
If you don't think this is Miley Cyrus' magnum opus you are wrong. And if you don't think that the United States should change this to their national anthem you are also wrong (the only other acceptable option is Ignition (Remix). Did you know there was a petition to get it changed? Where do I sign?)
She hops off the plane at LAX with her dreams and her cardigan (didn't we all Miley, didn't we all), welcome to the land of fame excess (whoa), is she gonna fit in? Jumps in the cab, here she is for the first time, looks to the right and sees the Hollywood sign (you know that's not possible right? Whatever. Doesn't matter)
She gets to the club in her taxi cab, and everybody looking at her now (She was 17 when this song came out...what club was this?) They judge her for her kicks, assuming that she's gotta be from out of town. (It's ok Miley, I've had this happen to me too. I went to a club in Vegas wearing ballet flats and a sweater. A guy asked to buy me a drink and I told him a bottle of water. He never came back #winning) It's so hard with my girls not around her (I tried unsuccessfully to get Jane to make this the title of her mission blog), and she makes the profound observation that this is definitely not a Nashville party (if you have not at least THOUGHT this in your life during an uncomfortable situation, I really don't know what to do with you) because all she sees are stilettos. I guess she never got the memo.
In conclusion, I love this jam. And when the DJ plays this song I feel alri-iiiight.

For that Child so dear and gentle
He came down to earth from Heaven
Who is God and Lord of all
And His shelter was stable
And his cradle was a stall
With the poor and mean and lowly
Lived on earth the Savior holy
Merry Christmas, everyone.

Forgive my sins, for I haven't found God
And I don't know when I can trust my heart
But you were my rock, never my stepping stone

Music
I've always been intrigued by a certain part of my patriarchal blessing. My blessing is very specific about teaching my children music and having music be an important part of my home. While I've played piano and violin since I was little, music hasn't been the center of my life the way I know it has for other people. So I was confused about why music was mentioned several times in my blessing.
It hit me today while I was listening to General Conference and following #ldsconf on Twitter. During the morning session the choir sang "Now Let Us Rejoice," and I tweeted "We'll love one another and never dissemble, but cease to do evil and ever be one." That song, and that line specifically, spoke to me just as much as any of the addresses during that session.
It's always been hard for me to express my testimony in words, even in writing. I can't explain it. I know Sam and Brittany (two of my favorite bloggers) have the amazing ability to put their faith into writing and I love them for it. I feel the Spirit, but when I try to talk about it, I can't do the experience justice.
I understand my blessing now. I might not be the best at expressing how I know that Heavenly Father is mindful of me during my trials (especially this week), but I can sing or listen or play the words "I'll strengthen thee, help thee and cause thee to stand/Upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand."
And if my children ask about my feelings on the Atonement, the words of "Come Thou Fount" tells it a lot better than I ever could:

"Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of GodHe to rescue me from danger interposed His precious blood.Prone to wanter, Lord I feel it. Prone to leave the God I love. Here's my heart, oh take and seal it. Seal it for thy courts above."I will work on expressing my testimony, but I know that for the times when I fall short, there will always be music make up the difference.
My mantra, designed by my sister, and also lines from a hymn, naturally.

Here's the thing, you HAVE to listen to country in the summer. It's just a rule. And Carrie Underwood's new CD is awesome, and that's coming from someone who doesn't even like country that much.

So come on let me in, I will be the sun
I will wake you up, I am who I was
Just open up your heart
Open up your heart
Open up your heart
I'm obsessed with this song. And I can't wait to see them March 31!

Valentine's Day
I came across this article today.I feel like it was sweet and had an interesting take on Valentine's Day
"look at your beloved today. really try to see him or her and think "what can i do for you?" rather than dwell on things they should do for you. there is a saying by rumi that i find so beautiful, "i look into your eyes and see the whole universe -- born and not yet born." there is so much to come especially if we can open our eyes and hearts to each other..."That's my goal for today: "What can I do for you?"
Also, a little Valentine's Day playlist for your enjoyment:
Enjoy :)

My family loves musicals. So when I found this version of the King singing "Impossible Dream" from Man of La Mancha, I just had to share.
You're so glad I did.

Uptown Girl
I don't watch Glee anymore, but The Warblers will always have a soft spot in my heart. What can I say, I love a man in uniform.
